Erectors can save cost and time by taking this welding technique in-house
Large steel erection projects commonly require heat treatment for welding because of the thick materials used in structural steel construction. Proper implementation is critical; so often this work is outsourced. The perceived level of expertise to perform this work can make the prospect of using in-house personnel daunting. However, most welding contractors are actually fully capable of performing on-site heat treatment operations.
The two primary methods for heat treating metal are preheating and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). Preheating is the process of heating the base metal to a specific temperature prior to welding to minimize the temperature difference between the welding arc and the base metal. This process helps to reduce internal stresses that occur as substantial temperature differences between the weld and the base metal normalize, which can cause cracking and distortion. Slowing the cooling rate also allows hydrogen to escape from the weld, which minimizes the potential for cracking.
Dear Valued Red-D-Arc Customer:
As we all continue to adjust to the global COVID-19 pandemic, we would like to take a moment to reach out to you to inform you that Red-D-Arc is continuing to vigilantly monitor the evolving developments and adjusting as necessary in order to safeguard our workforce and limit any potential impacts or disruptions to our commercial relationships.
At this time, Red-D-Arc operations are currently proceeding as usual, to the extent permitted by relevant governmental and federal authorities. While we are aware that various government-imposed shutdowns have been implemented for various industries in certain geographic locations, Red-D-Arc – like its parent company, Airgas – identifies itself as a business which provides essential services, including the supply of necessary equipment to various power plants, oil refineries, the petrochemical industry, government-led construction projects, and so forth.
Red-D-Arc was featured in the December/January issue of Tank Storage Magazine in an editorial titled “Rental welding equipment for storage tank fabricators”. Tank Storage Magazine is an industry leading publication, reporting exclusively on the bulk liquid tank storage and terminal sector.
The storage tank construction industry is highly competitive and fabricators gain a significant advantage by leveraging Red-D-Arc’s rental fleet of automatic tank welding equipment. Red-D-Arc supplies specialized automatic storage tank welding equipment to companies in the tank fabrication industry for projects all over the world.
Along with our specialized tank welding equipment comes a highly knowledgeable and experienced team of Red-D-Arc technicians. Sayer Hendricks – storage tank welding equipment specialist at Red-D-Arc is quoted in the article: “A fabrication company without prior knowledge of the equipment, is able to rent a turn-key tank welding automation system and increase their welding productivity by 40-50%. With on-site training, service and support, our customers are up and running quickly and making 100% x-ray quality welds without fail”

The decision to rent, lease or own welding equipment often depends on utilization rates, amount of equipment required and necessary process capabilities. If equipment will be used more than 60-70% you should consider buying or leasing equipment. If utilization rates are lower than 60%, renting may be the way to go. Renting provides you with immediate access to professionally maintained welding equipment when and where you need it. Red-D-Arc has the most up to date, diverse fleet of rental welding equipment available to accommodate any process or technological requirement.
We are a rental company after all, so let’s look at the welder rental option a little further. When renting a welder you pay for actual use, not equipment ownership. Renting minimizes costs associated with maintenance, repair, storage, handling and freight and can provide you with an opportunity to try out new equipment before deciding to purchase. Contractors, maintenance and repair companies, owner-operators and other welding professionals rent from Red-D-Arc because of our fleet size, equipment diversity, expert advice and equipment performance.
Many companies prefer to own their core fleet of equipment and rent additional equipment as required. Red-D-Arc’s WelderLogistics Lease Program program is a low cost, flexible option to obtain your core fleet, allowing you to conserve capital and avoid investing in depreciating assests. The WelderLogistics lease program is 100% write-off for tax purposes and the equipment remains under full factory warranty during the lease term. If you already have an existing fleet, simply trade it in for new equipment.
Red-D-Arc provided ProHeat 35 induction heating systems during the construction of The Wilshire Grand Centre in Los Angeles. Large box columns of various sizes and weights needed to be pre-heated during the fabricating and erecting process. Red-D-Arc suggested the use of Pro Heat 35 induction heating systems and helped design fixtures for the heating cables so the box columns could be pre-heated safely and effectively. The 73 story, 1100 foot tower is planned to be completed in 2017 and will become the tallest tower in California!
Red-D-Arc UK delivered and installed a new floor turntablefor a manufacturing facility in Doha, Qatar. Red-D-Arc’s logistics team arranged for the equipment to be air-freighted to the new manufacturing facility in Qatar where Engineers awaited the arrival to begin installation.
The installation consisted of a Red-D-Arc automation controller, 4×4 column and booms, 2×1 cross-sides and a 20 ton floor turntable. This took Red-D-Arc engineers only three days to fully install and weld test. They were able to begin on-site training shortly after.
